Top Places to Visit as a Fitness Lover (Without Losing Your Routine)

There’s a narrative online that says you either travel freely or you stay disciplined.

You either “heal” in a soft, unstructured way… or you stay consistent with your training, nutrition, and goals.

I don’t believe that.

For me, healing has been about learning how to enjoy my life without losing control. It’s about staying fit, grounded and consistent — while exploring new countries, cultures and parts of myself.

As a personal trainer, yoga teacher, and someone who has rebuilt her nervous system from burnout, I’ve learned this:

Structure is not restriction.
Structure is freedom.

Here are the places that allowed me to live that truth — as a self-confessed “gym bunny” who also deeply values healing, nature, and soul-led exploration.

1. Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica

Jungle, rhythm and nervous system repair

📍 Gym at the Old Harbour (behind the supermarket) – affordable day passes
📍 Kona Wellness Shala – yoga classes in an open-air jungle setting
📍 Vol’Air Dance Studio – Latin, belly dance, pole and more
📍 Cahuita National Park – hiking, wildlife, ocean swims

If you’re searching for a destination that blends strength training, yoga, dance and raw nature — this is it.

But for me, Costa Rica is far more than a travel recommendation.

There was a time in my life where I was working nearly 80 hours a week, navigating the aftermath of a breakdown, and living in a state of nervous system overdrive. On my bookshelf sat a travel book about Costa Rica which was a gift from an ex-boyfriend representing things that i was letting slip through my fingers.
But that book was a reminder that there was still a future.

Eventually, Costa Rica became the first stop of my independent travel journey. I stayed for three months. I kept going back. And I left a piece of my heart there.

From a wellness perspective, Puerto Viejo is powerful because:

  • You can lift weights in the morning.

  • Do yoga in the afternoon.

  • Swim in the ocean at sunset.

  • Eat fresh, whole foods easily.

  • Be surrounded by nature daily.

From a healing perspective, it regulates your nervous system without you trying too hard.

For anyone on a “healing journey” who doesn’t want to abandon their fitness identity — this is gold.

2. Koh Phangan, Thailand

The wellness island that aligns with your meridian

📍 Wild Wood Gym – outdoor training, pool, sauna, ice baths
📍 Multiple Muay Thai gyms – day passes available
📍 Abundant yoga and fitness studios
📍 Night markets – affordable, fresh local food

I arrived in Thailand with no real plan, just a ticket to Bangkok.

A friend told me, “You have to go to Koh Phangan. It’s magical.”

At first, it just felt busy and hot like much of Thailand. But slowly, something shifted. The energy of the island revealed itself.

And this might sound silly, but my friend and I genuinely laughed one evening and said “Why is everyone here at least 20% hotter?”

But it wasn’t just aesthetics.

It’s the environment.

When you’re surrounded by:

  • People training consistently

  • Yoga teachers

  • Muay Thai fighters

  • Digital nomads prioritising health

  • Ice baths and sauna culture

You naturally elevate.

This island aligns beautifully with a fitness-oriented lifestyle while still feeling relaxed and sunny. You can train hard in the morning, eat clean at night markets, and still feel like you’re on holiday.

From a data-driven health perspective, consistent training (3–5 sessions per week) combined with adequate recovery practices like sauna and cold exposure supports improved metabolic health, cardiovascular fitness and stress resilience. Koh Phangan makes this easy.

It’s wellness without being rigid.

3. Tulum, Mexico

Outdoor gyms and high-vibe holidays

📍 Outdoor gyms
📍 Boutique and regular indoor gyms
📍 Endless yoga classes
📍 Beach access, cenotes, nature excursions

Tulum is one of those places that’s hard to leave.

It attracts like-minded, health-conscious travellers. If you want your trip to feel like a proper holiday — white sand beaches, stunning turquoise water, beautiful aesthetics — but still want your workouts, this works.

There are outdoor gyms everywhere, which keeps costs down compared to some of the boutique options. It’s easy to find yoga, strength sessions, breathwork and more.

The only caveat?
It’s tourist-priced. You’ll pay more here than in other parts of Mexico.

But if you’re in a season where you want:

  • Sunshine

  • Aesthetic inspiration

  • Community

  • Structure

  • And freedom

Tulum delivers.

4. Fethiye, Turkey

Underrated, idyllic and wildly misunderstood

📍 D-Gym (D-Resort Göcek)
📍 Gocek Gym
📍 Butterfly Valley – hiking & swimming
📍 Babacamp – wellness events & classes
📍 Snorkelling & coastal hikes

This one surprises people.

Fethiye can get unfairly grouped into the all-inclusive British tourist category. But if you step away from that subculture, it is absolutely idyllic.

You can:

  • Hike dramatic coastal trails.

  • Swim and snorkel in crystal waters.

  • Visit wellness events at Babacamp.

  • Train at well-equipped local gyms.

It’s slower, more local, more grounded.

And sometimes that’s exactly what a healing journey needs.

Healing Without Losing Yourself

The “healing journey” is often portrayed as quitting everything, floating around barefoot, abandoning structure.

But real healing especially for women who have built discipline and strength, isn’t about losing that identity.

It’s about refining it.

Research consistently shows that maintaining:

  • 8–10k+ daily steps

  • 2–4 strength sessions weekly

  • Adequate protein intake

  • Consistent sleep patterns

…supports both physical health and emotional regulation.

When you travel to places that make this easy, you don’t fall off track.

You expand.

For me, travel became healing, not because I escaped my routine but because I learned how to carry it with me in a softer way.

I wasn’t living in survival mode anymore.
I wasn’t working 80-hour weeks.
I wasn’t proving my worth.

I was lifting weights in the jungle.
Doing yoga in the sun.
Swimming in open water.
Eating whole foods.
And choosing structure that felt like freedom.

That is what The Healing Journal is about.

Not perfection.
Not extremes.
But building a life where you can explore the world — and still feel strong inside your body.

If you’re someone who loves fitness but also craves adventure, these destinations offer both.

And if you’re on your own healing journey — remember:

You don’t have to abandon who you are to evolve
